- Feeding: vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, ink-free cardboard, and crushed eggshells. Avoid meat, dairy, and very fatty foods.
- Moisture: use the “squeeze test”; when you squeeze the substrate, a few drops should fall, never a stream.
- Light and airflow: worms dislike direct light; cover the bin with breathable materials.
- Temperature: the optimal range is between 64 °F and 79 °F (18–26 °C). Above 95 °F (35 °C), worms are at risk.
Worm castings will be ready when they have a dark color, fluffy texture, and a forest-floor smell—usually between 6 weeks and 3 months. The horizontal migration method allows for easy separation of the worms and yields clean, ready-to-use castings.
