What is linalool?

Linalool is one of the many terpenes discovered in the cannabis plant. Chemically speaking, it belongs to the alcohol group and is used primarily for aromatic purposes.

que es el linalool

Terpenes are the organic compounds responsible for providing plants with their organoleptic qualities, meaning they provide the specific flavors and scents for each one.

Linalool has a particularity compared to other terpenes: it is found on the INCI list, which includes the 26 fragrances that can be allergenic to people. For this reason, linalool is never found in isolation, but rather as a component of essential oils. This is because what makes linalool toxic is its oxidation. Therefore, when it is present as a component within an essential oil, this terpene enters into synergy with other elements that prevent its oxidation. When linalool is in its original state—that is, without oxidizing—it presents no toxicity or danger whatsoever.

Linalool structure

Linalool is a monoterpene. If you have been following our latest posts, you will already be familiar with this type of terpene: it consists of the union of two isoprene units, meaning it is composed of 10 hydrocarbon atoms.

It takes on an oily form that evaporates at 198 °C. In cannabis, it is found in the plant’s glandular trichomes, along with other types of terpenes. The main function of linalool, as well as that of other terpenes, is to protect the plant from external agents such as insects or bacteria. The aroma of plants that we humans find so attractive acts as a repellent for certain organisms. This is why most terpenes function as components in the insecticides we use in our daily lives.

Linalool flavor and aroma

As you already know, terpenes are what give the plant its organoleptic qualities, that is, its flavor and scent.

The particular aroma and flavor of linalool is floral with mentholated touches. Some people associate it with the scent of lavender, with a spicy touch. We can find it in more than 200 species:

  • Mint
  • Laurel
  • Cinnamon
  • Some citrus fruits
  • Birch
  • Some mushrooms
  • Cannabis Sativa L.

In cannabis, it is complex to identify and distinguish the flavor of linalool, as it mixes with the flavor of other terpenes. This is not a negative thing; on the contrary, the particularity of cannabis plants is precisely their ability to offer us, through their mixture, the best qualities of all their components. This is the so-called entourage effect.

Effects and benefits of linalool

Linalool is a terpene widely used in cosmetics to scent and fragrance products. For example, it gives a very pleasant fragrance to soaps, shower gels, or creams and balms. In addition to providing fragrance, linalool is especially good for preventing skin sagging and keeping it healthy.

It is also used as an ingredient in cleaning products and detergents, precisely because of its pleasant aroma. For this same reason, it is also widely used in perfumery and as a natural flavoring in the food industry.

As we have already mentioned, one of its most important benefits is its action as an insecticide. It already functions as a natural insecticide in the plant, so it is included as a component in industrial insecticides.

Regarding its effects, its potential sedative impacts on people have been studied. Research has been conducted on the effects of linalool on mice, which has shown that this terpene comes into contact with the central nervous system of mammals. Thus, it can have hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and hypothermic effects.

What are the medicinal properties of linalool?

Linalool is a terpene widely used in aromatherapy to combat anxiety. Some studies have shown that linalool can help achieve states of relaxation in mammals. Similarly, a study conducted on mice concluded that this terpene can combat states of aggression and stress.

The scientific community has also investigated the potential properties that linalool may have to combat diseases such as Alzheimer’s. When applied to mice, this terpene influenced them to have better cognitive and emotional function. This study, conducted in 2016, has opened the doors to future research on the neurostimulatory benefits that terpenes like linalool can have on people.

In addition to the therapeutic properties already mentioned, linalool is also an antimicrobial agent that strengthens the immune system, as well as being anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Cannabis varieties rich in linalool

Although we can find few varieties with more than 2% linalool, here is a list of some genetics that present the organoleptic qualities offered by this terpene:

Amnesia Haze

This potent variety offers you a flavor and aroma combined with cardamom, lime, marjoram, and mandarin in a sweet, smooth, and delicious way. Its high THC levels (reaching 22%) are why this genetic is widely known, as it offers a highly psychoactive and cheerful effect. This sativa-dominant strain has a flavor and aroma of freshly baked cookies and chocolate, with spicy and fruity touches provided by the linalool. It will provide you with a relaxing effect that can even be sedative and induce well-being, without being devastating. Medicinally and therapeutically, it is very useful for combating depression, anxiety, nausea, and eating disorders.

Special Kush 1

Native to the Hindu Kush area, this indica-dominant strain presents aromas and flavors of hash, pine, and mint with nuances of pepper and spices, which can be associated with the presence of linalool in its trichomes. It combines very well with its other dominant terpene, myrcene, together with which it offers an authentic indica effect that will leave you deeply relaxed.

Pluto 100% feminized

This genetic of unknown origins is an indica-dominant strain with a fairly citrusy and Kush aroma, very smooth and creamy. The citrus can also be noted in the flavor with earthy notes. Its physical effect is quite potent due to its high THC levels (21%). Being predominantly indica, its effects will be relaxing and sedative, something very characteristic of linalool. Regarding its medicinal properties, it is perfect for combating insomnia, depression, and muscle pain.
