Types of pots for cannabis plants

There are different types of pots available on the market for growing marijuana. Therefore, the outcome will depend on the type of cultivation and pots chosen. Not all pots are the same; there are many characteristics that differentiate one from another, such as the aeration they provide or how they treat the plant’s roots. This article explains the main differences to help you decide which pot to use for each cultivation.

What types of cannabis pots are there?

There are several types of cannabis pots, although they can generally be classified into 2 groups: plastic pots and fabric pots. Plastic pots have the most variety in terms of models, while fabric pots have fewer options available.

It is worth noting that pot size is one of the most important factors in cultivation. Each type of pot is designed for a specific stage of the plant’s growth. Therefore, you can find pots for the vegetative stage, as well as pots for cuttings and mother plants. Additionally, pots suitable for facilitating pruning and watering in different types of cultivation, indoor, outdoor, or hydroponics, can also be used.

Square plastic pots

Square plastic pots are the most commonly used in marijuana cultivation because they have specific sizes and shapes that are ideal for better placement and space utilization. Their shape is deeper than wide, allowing plants to grow taller, making them ideal for indoor cultivation, where space is utilized efficiently by placing them in a square formation, closely together until they need to be separated.

Within square pots, there are white and black pots. White pots are used for outdoor cultivation, where they reflect sunlight, preventing the substrate from heating up as much as with a black pot, thus avoiding root stress. Black pots are intended for indoor cultivation, where intense light does not penetrate the black pot, preventing direct light and therefore heat buildup. Products are available from 7x7x9cm, the smallest at just 0.20L, up to 11L.

Special autoflowering pots

This 18L square pot in white is ideal for cultivating larger autoflowering marijuana plants like Deimos, Magnum, or Big Devil XL. Since these plants take about 3 months to complete their cycle and are outdoors, they need a good amount of substrate to develop their roots and maintain the necessary moisture.

For these large plants, it is necessary to provide enough space to ensure adequate water supply for growth. One of the most common mistakes is using 7L pots for XL autoflowers. This could result in roots being constricted and lacking sufficient water due to the small size of the pot.

Large white pots with handles

Large white round pots with handles are especially useful for the flowering stage of outdoor plants or for maintaining mother plants indoors. When cultivating marijuana, it is necessary to transplant each time their size increases and eventually becomes too large for the pot. Therefore, it is necessary to grow in square pots and transplant each time the roots fill the pot, from 3.5L to 7L, from 7L to 11L, and from 11L to a 30L round pot.

Moreover, it is advisable to cultivate in the 11L pot until the change in photoperiod with the summer season, and then transfer it to a 30L pot with well-nourished soil to produce a good bush at the end of flowering. If this phase arrives too soon, it is possible to let it grow in the 30L pot and transplant it in summer to a 50L pot.

White grow bags

Grow bags have become popular due to their convenience. Normal plastic pots need to be cleaned for reuse, but with grow bags, after harvesting, you simply discard them and replace them with new ones, saving a lot of time. They can also be cleaned for reuse, but they are intended to be disposable.

Grow bags are taller than they are wide, with a round and elongated shape, ideal for indoor cultivation where many can be planted together without interfering with each other. You can plant countless cuttings in a small space with 2.2L or 4.4L bags to maximize space and yield. These bags allow planting any seed, as sizes range up to 44 liters.

They are very easy to transplant, as you only need to cut the bag and place the root ball in a larger one or transplant directly into the garden outdoors.

Root pruning pots

The Aeropot root pruning pot prunes roots to ensure they never stop growing secondary roots. When cultivating marijuana in this pot, plants will grow as wide as they are tall. With so many secondary roots, the plants will grow wide like bushes, and since the roots keep developing, there will be no growth stagnation until the entire pot is filled.

This product is perfect for transplanting plants into an outdoor garden, where it is preferable for them not to grow too tall, resulting in more compact and full plants that will later become buds. Indoors, it is ideal for cultivating mother plants, from which countless cuttings can be taken until they need to be transplanted into a larger pot.

Additionally, the roots will be better oxygenated and fed than in a completely closed pot. Water should be applied slowly and avoiding the edge of the pot, as otherwise, water will leak through the holes.

Grid pots

These pots are designed for hydroponic or aeroponic cultivation, where the root system is held by clay balls and receives constant water irrigation. Depending on the system, you will need a specific size of grid pot or another, as size does not determine whether more or fewer roots will be thrown.

[ppgbo product=”1300″ language=”en”]

Smaller grid pots are suitable for cuttings grown in hydro and aero, where they are held by neoprene or clay balls while their cuttings root and also in some systems like the Dutch Pot Hydro where 5 of these pots are placed in a 12L pot on the lid. Larger ones are for certainsystems, such as 3″ for Nutriculture’s Amazon or 6″ for Neptune’s DWC Pot. They are highly durable and easy to clean, allowing for multiple uses.

Fabric pots

These fabric pots are suitable for allowing our plants better ventilation and avoiding heat stress in very dry climates. Thanks to the proper ventilation these bags provide, the roots of our plants will receive a pruning that will promote unrestricted growth and during flowering will provide large, quality buds.

These bags can be washed in the washing machine, so after use, they can be washed and ready for reuse. The system of these bags is very similar to that used by root pruning pots to shape the roots, with the difference that being fabric, they can be washed and reused.

These are some of the types of cannabis pots available. Just choose the one that best suits each cultivation to achieve maximum optimization.
