We’ve already talked about the best indica strains and the most potent strains, so today we’re going to talk about marijuana strains with the highest THC level. After having compared hundreds of strains, we’ve decided to go with Y Griega by Medical Seeds, a strain that has an incredibly high THC level of 27.12%.
THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, one of the cannabinoids present in marijuana which is in charge of the psychoactive effect. THC has the capacity to reduce pain without fusing with brain receptors, which is what happens with substances like morphine or heroin. It can be used to treat eating disorders, for example to stimulate appetite in people that suffer anorexia. It stimulates the brain cells in charge of releasing dopamine into your system, which is why it produces a slight euphoric sensation.
Y Griega is a strain with a sativa genotype of 80%, offering hard buds unlike any other sativa strain. It comes from a cross between Amnesia and a Kali Mist, two sativa-dominant strains that offer long flowering period but dense buds. The citric Amnesia taste combined with Kali Mist’s strong flavor makes for an intense, penetrating earthy flavor.
At the Spannabis 2016 convention we had the honor of interviewing Javier Ruano, one of the main breeders at Medical Seeds, and he told us how they managed to get such amazing THC levels in this particular strain. What happened was, Canna was doing free cannabinoid exams and Medical Seeds hadn’t prepared anything, the only thing they had was a bud that Javier had on him at the time for his own personal use from a plant that he grew himself. A few months later they got an email with the results, and they were ridiculously surprised at the potency of a plant that they didn’t even design to come out so strong.

Indoors, this strain gives really good results, especially if grown using the SCRoG or SoG method. These plants grow vigorously, developing quite rapidly right up until the last week of the flowering period, so they might grow too big if grown traditionally. If grown with a SCRoG mesh, you’ll have more than enough with 5 or 6 plants per square meter, which will grow out with long branches, completely covering the mesh.
If you prefer to grow with the SoG method with 25 plants m2 in 3L flowerpots, you’ll be able to cut your time, saving on the growth period and getting the most out of this strains structure. It has a long flowering period that can take up to 13 weeks that sativa lovers don’t usually mind waiting for due to its unique effect. It can give up to 550g per square meter of hard, compact buds that you won’t find on any other sativa strain.
Outdoors, this strain grows into giant trees, and every day you look they’ll have grown even more, getting up to 3m when planted in the ground. This strain does its best in warm and mild climates; this plant loves the sun and will reward growers with gigantic, productive plants. Just like any good sativa, it’s fungi resistance is quite good although we recommend preventing fungi attacks with a fungicide, due to how compact this strains’ buds are. We recommend using wiring or stringing both the main trunk and all of the branches; it has a resistant structure but the buds might end up being extremely hefty.
It has an earthy flavor with a slight sweet hint to it. The smoke is extremely thick, filling up your lungs in an instant. Due to its extremely high THC levels, Y Griega has a very mental, colorful and long-lasting effect. A few minutes after consuming it you’ll notice your eyes already getting red and heavy. Lights will become more intense, leaving its consumer in a parallel universe in which absolutely everything is funny. This strain activates the brain, stimulating imagination and creativity.
