History, origin in Mexico, and traditional use in ancestral rituals
Mexican magic truffles, also called sacred mushrooms or niños santos, have a deep origin in the indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica, such as the Mazatec, Zapotec, and Mixtec. Used in shamanic rituals to heal, predict, or connect with the spiritual, they were an essential part of ceremonies guided by healers.
Interesting facts about these Mexican truffles
- They were popularized in the West by the banker and amateur mycologist R. Gordon Wasson, after visiting the Mazatec shaman María Sabina in the 1950s.
- They are being investigated in clinical contexts for their therapeutic benefits in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Unlike mushrooms, these truffles are actually sclerotia, an underground storage structure that the fungus produces under adverse conditions; therefore, they are more resistant and stable than mushrooms.
In Spain, magic truffles can be legally acquired, but only for non-human consumption purposes. Their sale is permitted as long as they are intended for mycological study, observation, collection, or decoration. Therefore, it is important to remember that they should not be consumed under any circumstances, and their use must strictly adhere to the purposes permitted by current legislation.
Storage method
- Truffles can be stored in their original unopened packaging for one week in the refrigerator.
- Once opened, they will lose their properties within a maximum of 3 days.
- To preserve them long-term, dry the truffles. In this case, they can last about 2 years in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place.
Natural compounds present in Mexican truffles
Mexican truffles are known in the world of mycology for their content of natural alkaloids. The two main compounds that define this sclerotium are psilocybin and psilocin.
From an informative perspective, these compounds act specifically in the body by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain. Once psilocybin is processed, it converts into psilocin. This has a molecular structure similar to serotonin, which allows for the study of how these elements influence neuronal plasticity and communication between different areas of the central nervous system under controlled study environments.
