What is a blunt and how is it prepared?

Marijuana consumption has evolved so much in recent years that there are countless ways to enjoy this wonderful plant. Smoked, vaporized, eaten, drunk… Each method of consuming marijuana has pros, cons, and variations in its psychoactive effects.

A classic in the cannabis world

Whether you are enjoying your CBD or want to obtain the benefits of traditional cannabis, the blunt is one of the most elegant and iconic ways to do so.

However, although there are many ways to consume marijuana, the majority of people smoke it. Within this category, there are also many divisions, with the blunt wrap being one of the best known.

What is a blunt wrap?

A blunt is a form of cannabis consumption that consists of filling the wrapper of a cigar or cigarillo with marijuana.

What is a blunt wrap made of?

A blunt is usually made from tobacco leaf. However, you can find different varieties, sizes, and flavors.

Unlike a traditional joint rolled with thin paper, a blunt uses a thicker layer. As a result, a joint made with a blunt wrap burns more slowly and produces denser smoke. This characteristic allows for longer, shared consumption sessions, which has influenced its popularity in social settings.

Nowadays, the market has evolved and there are wrappers designed specifically for making blunts, known as blunt wraps. These can be made of processed tobacco or alternative materials like hemp, which responds to a demand for nicotine-free options. They are also sold in different flavors, which modifies the sensory experience of consumption.

Differences between blunts and joints

Although they may look similar at first glance, there are several important differences between blunts and joints, both in their composition and in the consumption experience.

Size and duration

One of the most obvious differences is the size. Blunts are usually larger and more compact, which means that:

  • They take longer to consume
  • They are more common in social or shared settings

For their part, joints are usually smaller, with a shorter duration and more individual consumption.

Rolling material

The material used for rolling makes a key difference:

  • Joints are rolled with thin paper, usually made of plant fibers like hemp or rice
  • To roll a blunt, tobacco leaves or tobacco-derived wrappers are typically used

This not only affects how they are rolled, but also how they burn and the type of smoke they produce.

Content and effects

Another fundamental difference is in what they contain, although this depends more on each person’s preference.

  • Joints: generally do not include tobacco (although it depends on the mix), so the effect comes mainly from the cannabis
  • Blunts: by using tobacco leaf, they do contain nicotine, which can provide a more stimulating or “invigorating” effect

The combination of cannabis and nicotine can intensify the experience and also increase the potential for dependence. For this very reason, if you want to continue enjoying your mixes, you can choose to try nicotine-free tobacco.

Origins of the blunt

The origins of marijuana date back to the seventh millennium BC. However, to understand the origins of the blunt, we must go back to the Caribbean in the 19th century. There, the inhabitants of Jamaica and Puerto Rico began smoking marijuana wrapped in tobacco leaves. The exact reason is unknown, but it is assumed that the shortage of paper forced them to invent new methods to consume cannabis.

However, the history of the blunt in modern life begins in the 90s in New York. Due to strict anti-drug policies, cannabis consumers began inserting marijuana into cigars. The blunt reduced the odor and disguised the fact that the substance being smoked was cannabis. Furthermore, marijuana at that time was considered a marginal drug, while cigars were a symbol of wealth, elegance, and power.

This method of consumption expanded rapidly due to its discretion. In fact, it was common to see rappers of the era (2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg…) performing with a blunt in their hand.

The popularity of American hip-hop and the frequent use of blunts by artists internationalized this method of consumption.

Pros and cons of the blunt

The use of a blunt today has little in common with its beginnings. Nowadays, all materials have been refined to make them less harmful to health. However, there are still advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

  • Combustion is slower, so the cannabis is tasted more and better.
  • Companies manufacture blunt wraps with a very extensive variety of flavors, so you can alternate to try them all.
  • The original blunt wrap is larger than common paper, so the amount of marijuana that fits is greater.
  • Odor and discretion: The paper is more discreet, as it looks like a cigar.

Disadvantages

  • It is considerably more expensive than regular rolling paper. Roughly speaking, 5 blunt wraps cost almost the same as 200 regular papers. Of course, the amount of marijuana that can be incorporated is higher.
  • Fragility: It is a paper that is very sensitive to touch and saliva, so it can break easily if you are not careful.
  • Blunt paper is made of tobacco, so it contains carcinogenic and addictive properties. This can be a problem for smokers who only consume marijuana. However, currently, papers based on hemp are manufactured, so these problems are avoided.

How to prepare a blunt

The way to assemble a blunt today is completely different from its origins. At that time, a blunt was prepared as follows:

  • Open a cigar and extract the tobacco from it.
  • Insert the marijuana.
  • Roll the blunt as if it were rolling a cannabis cigarette.

Due to the great popularity the product acquired, many companies produced their own blunt wraps with various flavors and sizes to adapt the experience to each type of consumer.

Materials for rolling a blunt

  • Marijuana flowers, of your preferred variety.
  • A grinder to grind them correctly.
  • Blunt paper or a cigar.
  • Rolling tray, to keep the space organized.

Instructions for preparing a blunt step by step

Nowadays, a blunt is prepared like any other marijuana cigarette. So the steps to follow are as follows:

Choose the wrapper

Currently, you can find different types of blunt wraps in the same places where you buy the rest. These can be chosen with or without flavor. If you prefer to use a cigar, you will have to make sure it is not too dry.

Prepare the flowers

To be able to use the buds, they can be ground with a grinder or crumbled by hand. In the case of using a cigar, it must be emptied and mixed with the flowers.

Moisten the wrapper

To handle the blunt paper more easily, it should be moistened. This will make it a more flexible paper, in addition to sealing any fine cracks that may exist. This can be done either with saliva or by dipping your finger in water.

Place the marijuana

You must place the marijuana on the paper. For this, you need between 1 and 2 grams, since these papers are larger than those for joints. In the case of using a cigar wrapper, you will have to add more plant material.

Roll the blunt and seal it

When rolling it, you will have to use both hands to gently rock the wrapper back and forth. While performing this movement, you should pack the marijuana. Roll and smooth it until the wrapper is well sealed.

Burn it

Once rolled, pass the lighter flame along the seam, helping to seal it and making it burn more evenly. The lighter should not be brought too close to the wrapper, because it could burn it.
