Red Hot Cookies®, a strain that is here to stay at Sweet Seeds®

Sweet Seeds® is a very special cannabis seed bank. Unlike most companies, which are dedicated to buying seeds and then packaging them, Sweet Seeds® produces all the seeds it markets, providing innovations in terms of genetics, evolution, and new developments. They are pioneers in the feminization of cannabis seeds, pioneers in obtaining feminized autoflowering varieties through meticulous breeding work, and also pioneers in creating seeds that produce red flowers, known as The Red Family.

Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83), a variety from The Red Family

One of their masterpieces is the prized Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83). This variety is the result of a cross between Tropicanna Cookies (Girl Scout Cookies x Tangie) and a selected elite clone of Tangie. To achieve this variety, specimens were selected that pass on the characteristic of producing red-colored fruits to 60% of their offspring.

It is one of the varieties from the USA known as ‘Super Strong’, due to its intense and long-lasting effects. It is especially indicated for experienced consumers, as its THC concentration level reaches up to 25%. On the other hand, its red-colored fruits give off a penetrating and intense sweet aroma with a flavor reminiscent of tangerine, mango, and forest fruits, achieving supreme quality in the flavor, effects, and beauty of its buds.

Under optimal conditions, its indoor production ranges between 500 and 600 g/m², with a flowering period of 8 weeks. Cultivation with organic nutrition is recommended to maximize its organoleptic properties.

With a percentage of 60% sativa and 40% indica, it is expected to have a psychoactive and stimulating effect, boosting creativity and imagination. Its therapeutic properties are indicated for improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety levels, and stimulating the appetite, among others.

How to grow Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83)

Indoor Cultivation of Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83)

To maximize production, it is recommended to form a 5×5 square, with 25 units in 7 L pots, in a space of 1.20 m² and under a light equivalent to 600W of sodium. With these elements, 600 g can be reached without much difficulty.

With the S.O.G. cultivation technique, a vegetative period of between 2 and 3 weeks is recommended. On the other hand, if we prefer a S.C.R.O.G. type cultivation, in the same 1.2 m² space we can use 9 specimens in pots of about 18 L with a growth period close to 4-5 weeks. By pruning and bending, we will manage to cover the entire cultivation area, achieving a production similar to S.O.G. cultivation, but with 2 main differences. In this case, we will only need 9 specimens instead of 25. On the downside, we will need a longer vegetative period, increasing electricity costs and reducing the number of harvests we can carry out in a year.

Outdoor Cultivation of Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83)

Its outdoor cultivation is simple and rewarding, giving the best results when carried out in areas with warm temperatures. Like all cannabis plants, it appreciates receiving as many hours of sun as possible, as this achieves optimal development that will lead to abundant flowering.

It is recommended to sow in a pot smaller than 1 liter and make the necessary transplants as the plant grows, achieving optimal development of the root system. At the bottom of the pot, we will place 4 cm of expanded clay to facilitate water drainage and allow the area to be oxygenated. Then, we will fill with a substrate of proven quality and add 10% humus.

Something that facilitates development in the early stages of the seedling is not to overdo the irrigation water and try to keep the ambient humidity high, around 65%. You can also build a small greenhouse where you can carry out the sowing and the first 3-4 weeks of growth. Later, if conditions are good, we can have the plant completely outdoors.

Regarding nutrition, it is always recommended to use organic fertilizers and not to overdo the amount, as balance is key. Something simple and economical is to regulate the pH level. These small actions are what make the difference between a good harvest and an excellent one.

If we want to enjoy its fruits to the fullest, we must be patient and harvest at the optimal point of ripeness. We can verify this using a handheld microscope, which will allow us to monitor the state of the trichomes.

Finally, it must be remembered that, once the harvest is done, the process that will largely determine the quality of the buds remains: drying and curing.

Drying and curing in appropriate temperature and humidity conditions will lead to optimal evaporation of chlorophyll, allowing you to enjoy the flavors typical of one of the varieties with the most bouquet on the market, such as Red Hot Cookies® (SWS83).

How are these beautiful red flowers achieved?

This is one of the questions we growers ask ourselves the most, as the amazing color of the buds can generate an extra desire to grow and understand how and why these genetics are capable of forming these prized fruits. The key is found in anthocyanins, pigments that are found in plant cells and that give red, purple, or blue color to the leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants.

As a result of obtaining genetics with such a special capacity to produce anthocyanins, and by carrying out specific cross-breeding work, one can look for specimens with a higher percentage of pigmentation in the offspring. From them, work continues to obtain seed-descendant populations in which these shades can be seen in most of their individuals, without neglecting other aspects such as flavor, effect, or production. This process presents arduous breeding and stabilization work, only within the reach of the best seed breeders.
