BHO (Butane Hash Oil) is a cannabis concentrate obtained through butane extraction. Although it is also known as marijuana or cannabis oil or hash oil, it is not the same as infused olive oil: the latter is prepared by incorporating cannabis into a vegetable oil, whereas BHO is a concentrated extract suitable for your consumption.

This article addresses the production of BHO concentrate, prior to any potential subsequent dilution. It is important to distinguish between both phases: adding an extract to olive oil does not confirm its composition nor does it eliminate potential solvent residues.
The use of butane carries risks of fire and explosion, and the appearance or texture of the product does not allow for verification of its purity. Furthermore, its potency cannot be known, nor can it be considered suitable for medicinal use without the appropriate controls. Therefore, claims regarding safety and consumption in the original text should be treated with special caution.

BHO to cannabis oil
Utensilios
- Borosilicate extraction tube. () Roller Extractor Tube
- Paper filters
- A Pyrex tray or similar, as flat as possible.
- Good-quality blades that do not bend. BHO Scraping Blades
- A pot of water and a ceramic hob, never a gas stove.
- Leftover plant material or your best buds.
- Heavy-duty fabric work gloves, not rubber gloves.
- A silicone tray rosin paper or baking paper
Ingredientes
- Impurity-free gas. Not just any cheap gas will do; it must be specifically indicated for gas extraction never lighter gas.
- Alcohol for cleaning the materials.
Elaboración paso a paso
- Fill the Roller Extractor or extraction tube. Do this gradually, pressing the material down so that no empty spaces remain.
- Once full, place it in the freezer for 24 hours, together with the can or cans of gas you are going to use.
- After 24 hours, place a Roller Extractor paper filter over the area where the gas will come out, so that no plant material falls into the oil.
- Clean your Pyrex tray using alcohol and kitchen paper.
- In a controlled, open area (expert-level step), hold the tube firmly with one hand and, with the other, feed the gas in through one end and wait for it to come out through the other, keeping the tube vertical at all times. You will notice that, after approximately the first can has been emptied, the gas will begin to come out from the bottom of the tube. From that point onwards, allow it to collect inside the Pyrex tray.
- Once you have emptied the cans and no more liquid comes out from the bottom, you will see the gas in the tray begin to bubble. This means that the gas is evaporating. However, even if you leave it there until it stops bubbling, the gas will not be completely removed, as some remains trapped inside the particles that make up the resin. For this reason, you will need the pot of water and the ceramic hob.
- Fill half of the pot with water and warm it slightly beforehand, then leave the hob at setting 2 or even 1, depending on the ceramic hob. The pot should be an appropriate size so that the Pyrex tray can rest on top of it like a lid, covering a good part of its surface without any risk of falling into the water. You do not need two trays, nor should the tray containing the oil be submerged in the water.
- Place the Pyrex tray containing the gas mixture on top, and you will see that it begins to bubble again. Leave it like this for a short while, then use the blade to help burst any stubborn bubbles until no more appear. Do not apply excessive heat. Although this may speed up the process, the extraction will lose a great deal of potency and flavour.
- Once no more bubbles appear, all that remains is to scrape it from the tray using the blades. Move the blade across the surface as if you were mowing a football pitch, from right to left without passing over the same area twice. After each pass, place the blade containing the oil onto non-stick baking paper or, alternatively, onto a silicone mat.
- Once you have finished with all the blades, place the mat together with the blades in the freezer for 2 minutes. Using another blade, you can then remove the oil from the other blades more easily, as it becomes more solid when cold and is easier to handle than at room temperature, when it can barely be touched.
- Gather everything in the centre of a sheet of baking paper and place it back in the freezer. Take it out after 2 minutes and gradually form all the oil into a single ball so that you can store it in a small silicone container. If it becomes sticky before you finish, place it back in the freezer for one minute at a time until you manage to form the ball.
Notes
How to use cannabis oil
To use it, simply dissolve a small amount of product (1 g) in 30 ml of olive oil and use it as oil drops. *We strongly remind you that this recipe is provided for informational purposes only and that this product is not intended for human consumption. It is only suitable for ornamental use, aromatherapy and/or collection. As we have seen, this article is about BHO, a cannabis concentrate obtained with butane, and not about an infused vegetable oil. They are different products, even though both are sometimes called “marijuana oil.”
In this type of extraction, it is advisable to pay attention to safety and the quality of the result: the appearance of the concentrate is not enough to know if it contains solvent residues. If you have any questions about the differences between BHO and other cannabis oils, you can leave them in the comments.
