Crumble is an English term that means something like “crumble” or “break apart” and is commonly used in cooking to describe a texture. In the cannabis world, crumble is also a type of extract or concentrate that looks similar to a piece of solidified honey, which breaks into pieces when handled.
How crumble is made
Crumble is a derivative of an extraction method called BHO, which stands for “Butane Hash Oil.” This oil serves as the base for creating various types of products. BHO is made using butane, as the name suggests, because this gas effectively separates the trichomes from the buds.

However, it’s a dangerous technique that is not suitable for home use due to a high risk of combustion. In fact, news reports occasionally surface about explosions occurring in homes from attempts to use gas to make this type of hash. This type of extraction should only be performed by experts with proper equipment.
Purging the BHO
This cannabis extraction method produces a yellow liquid product, which is the BHO. The next step is purging, a crucial process to evaporate all the gas content and remove contaminants. Depending on the purging technique used, different textures can be achieved.
The most well-known concentrates are Shatter, Wax, Budder, and Crumble. What varies to obtain each type is the purging temperature and vacuum time. In the case of crumble, it’s made at a lower temperature than the others but is exposed to vacuum for a longer time. The result is a substance with a structure that has porous formations created by evaporated gas, somewhat resembling a honeycomb.
The best thing about crumble is that due to the lower temperature, terpenes and cannabinoids are not destroyed, so its potency, flavor, and aroma remain intact. In other words, it has better organoleptic properties compared to other BHO varieties.
Types of BHO
As mentioned earlier, there are many types of BHO, and crumble is one of them.
THCA Diamonds
This is one of the most recent extraction techniques. It’s also known as crystalline THCA and has up to 99.9% purity. It is extracted from BHO or Rosin.
Terp Sauce
It’s made using a technique similar to that of diamonds (in fact, both extracts are sometimes combined when consumed). This extraction is dense, liquid, and rich in flavor and aroma.

Budder
The name comes from “butter,” referring to its smooth and creamy texture. The color is opaque yellow and it can contain up to 80% THC. It is made by vigorously whipping the BHO during the purging process.
Shatter
It resembles glass, but with a light brown or dark golden color. It may contain between 50% and 90% THC. To produce it, the BHO is left to purge at low temperatures.
Wax
This type of BHO resembles honey or beeswax. It has a yellowish or light brown color and a texture that’s in between shatter and budder.
Crumble
It’s named after the famous English dessert made with apples. The texture may vary slightly, but in general, it’s a somewhat dry product compared to other BHO types. This is due to its slow purging process at low temperatures.
Oil
This is the easiest to obtain since no special purging method is applied after extraction. Its texture is oily, golden yellow or dark brown in color, and very similar to regular oil.
Types of crumble
There are also various types of crumble, whose final texture depends on the materials used in its production.
Wax Crumble
It contains more lipids or waxes, which help retain terpenes better. It’s brittle, but not as much as regular crumble.
Sugar Crumble
It has a more crystallized texture and is made from fresh buds. It contains fewer lipids and is therefore more solid. When broken, it doesn’t fragment but rather pulverizes, like sugar.
How to consume crumble
One advantage of cannabis extracts is that, besides being highly concentrated, they’re also very versatile in terms of consumption. Crumble can be enjoyed the traditional way, in a joint, sprinkled over ground buds. If you choose this method, be cautious, as the smoke will be quite harsh and very potent.

Another way to use crumble is by vaporizing it with an electronic nail or a dab rig. It’s recommended to dab at a lower-than-usual temperature to better preserve the terpenes. Crumble can also be easily included in edibles, as there’s no need to decarboxylate it like cannabis. Simply melt butter or oil in a pan and add the crumble until it dissolves. Your cannabutter will then be ready to use in any recipe like cookies, brownies, or other baked goods.
CBD Crumble
Crumble can also be made from CBD buds. The production process and final texture and appearance are the same, except the final product has a high concentration of CBD instead of THC, meaning it won’t get you high, but it has a flavor and aroma very similar to cannabis crumble.
CBD Crumble is medicinal and can be used daily, as it has anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve stress, pain, and improve sleep quality.
