Description
Californian red worm for professional home vermicomposting
The California red worm is the most widely used species in vermicomposting thanks to its high capacity to process large amounts of organic matter, rapid reproduction, and the exceptional quality of the worm castings it produces. It is an ideal solution for growers seeking self-sufficiency, living soils, and top-tier organic nutrition without the need for chemical fertilizers.
The worm castings produced through this process are among the most complete and balanced organic fertilizers available. Their action goes far beyond simple nutrient supply, delivering comprehensive improvements to substrate health and plant development:
- Root biostimulation: rich in natural auxins and gibberellins that promote stronger roots and more vigorous plants.
- Active microbiota: provides a high concentration of beneficial microorganisms that help prevent soil-borne pathogens.
- Improved substrate structure: increases aeration and water-holding capacity, making nutrient uptake easier.
- Balanced, bioavailable nutrition: slow-release macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients that are easily absorbed by roots.
Why buy Californian red worms for your grow?
Buying California red worms means investing in a natural system that genuinely improves yield, soil health, and nutrient efficiency:
- High feeding rate: they can consume an amount of organic matter equivalent to their own body weight each day.
- Rapid reproduction: under optimal conditions, the population can double every 60–90 days.
- Total versatility: ideal for worm bins, urban gardens, and organic farming.
- Guaranteed health: bred by professional vermiculture specialists in Valencia, with sanitary registration.
Vermicomposting: how to get started with Californian red worms
Vermicomposting is a biological process in which worms and microorganisms work together to transform organic waste into worm castings, a stable, odor-free, and 100% organic fertilizer. Once your worms arrive, following a few basic guidelines will make all the difference.
- Feeding: vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, ink-free cardboard, and crushed eggshells. Avoid meat, dairy, and very fatty foods.
- Moisture: use the “squeeze test”; when you squeeze the substrate, a few drops should fall, never a stream.
- Light and airflow: worms dislike direct light; cover the bin with breathable materials.
- Temperature: the optimal range is between 64 °F and 79 °F (18–26 °C). Above 95 °F (35 °C), worms are at risk.
Worm castings will be ready when they have a dark color, fluffy texture, and a forest-floor smell—usually between 6 weeks and 3 months. The horizontal migration method allows for easy separation of the worms and yields clean, ready-to-use castings.
