Kief: What it is, how it is extracted and its effects

Marijuana allows you to obtain different extracts and concentrates by separating the trichomes from the plant matter of the buds. From a single cannabis plant, you can get multiple products with different characteristics, such as the CBD Hash available in our online grow shop. Even today, different characteristics and applications are still being discovered. Among this whole amalgam of products and utilities, Kief is included, a concentrate widely used for being an excellent way to obtain a great effect while using small amounts.

 What is Kief?

Kief is a cannabis concentrate made up of the trichomes that cover the flowers. These trichomes appear during flowering and concentrate a good portion of the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes. They can be extracted through different mechanical techniques.

Trichomes are tiny glands that cover the plant in the form of minute stalks. A large part of the terpenes and cannabinoids are concentrated in their heads, which are responsible for the smell and potency of the flowers. This mantle covers the plant during the last weeks of flowering and changes tone as the plant matures.

Origin of Kief

This type of extraction originates from Asia. Specifically, it was born in northern India, as well as in neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Nepal, where some of the best Kief in the world is found. Likewise, there are various writings that speak of it in ancient China.

However, in the 60s and 70s, followers of the hippie movement traveled to the cradle of cannabis, from where they would export a great variety of seeds and extraction methods, such as Kief. It was then that Morocco would lead the exports of this substance. In fact, the word Kief comes from the Arabic word “Kayf,” which means pleasure, due to the sensations it generated.

How to extract Kief

Kief can be extracted through different methods, and it can be done at home in a simple way. You will only need certain utensils that allow you to separate the trichomes from the plant. Some of them are:

The grinder method

One of the main drawbacks of this method is that it takes a long time because you obtain a modest amount of it, making it perfect for those who don’t mind waiting or aren’t planning to harvest Kief, being a plus for all of them.

The most common way to make Kief is by using a grinder, preferably with three or four compartments, as it allows you to grind it and collect it without any problem. You will have to make sure that the grinder is clean before using it. Likewise, there are some that have 3-4 chambers in total and a filter below the main grinding chamber with which to sift and collect the Kief, while filtering most of the material.

The sifting box or Kief Box

These types of boxes have been created to obtain Kief easily and effectively. The box is made up of three parts that have a fine metal filter and a dark glass base. The operation is simple: the marijuana is placed on the top and shaken to remove the trichomes. These fall through the filter onto the glass, facilitating scraping. What is needed is a sifting mechanism that separates the trichomes and places them on a clean surface.

In addition, you can choose to insert a small coin inside so that it is faster and the return is greater, but the product obtained will be of lower quality.

Dry ice extraction

Cold facilitates the separation of trichomes from the plant matter, adding quality to the Kief obtained. This process consists of introducing the dry, unground material into a container containing dry ice. A 160-micron sieve is placed at the opening.

The process is as follows: the contents are shaken and the trichomes will detach. Before shaking it, it is best to place a tray to collect it. If you want to obtain a quality extraction, you should perform the sifting again with a smaller sieve that allows you to collect purer glands. To collect it, you can use a credit card or similar, helping to group all the substance to store it in a container.

Effects of Kief

Marijuana Kief has effects different from those generated by marijuana buds. Since it is made with trichomes, the sensations it produces are much stronger, even having a psychoactive potential capable of creating hallucinations. Therefore, the dose to be used should always be a third of the usual one.

Benefits and drawbacks of using Kief

Before deciding whether to perform these types of resin extractions or not, you should know the advantages and disadvantages of these types of methods. The main advantage is that once this process is finished, it will be ready for use. Likewise, it offers great potency thanks to its purity, as it is obtained without using any type of solvent. Similarly, it allows it to be used in different ways, being versatile.

On the other hand, depending on the method that has been used, the return will be of better or higher quality. To obtain quality, you will have to perform several siftings. Likewise, it is the extraction with the least potency, except for charas.

Thus, Kief is a substance that offers more advantages than drawbacks. However, like any extraction, to extend its shelf life, Kief must be stored correctly in an airtight container that does not allow air and therefore oxygen to enter. It is recommended to keep it in a dry and dark environment. In this way, it can be used at any time.

FAQ about Kief

What is Kief and what is it used for?

Kief is a cannabis extraction that is created by separating the trichomes from cannabis flowers. It has several uses:
  • Making Moonrocks
  • Preparing e-liquid
  • Pressing it and turning it into hash
  • Preparing Kief butter or tea
  • Adding it to a blunt

How is Kief made?

To get Kief, you must separate the trichomes from the marijuana plant, especially from the buds. There are several ways to do this:
  • Sieve. The classic method is to place the buds in a sieve and move them until there are no trichomes left on them.
  • Kief Box or sifting box. Similar to sifting but automatically.
  • Extraction washing machine. Water and ice are used for the extraction.
  • Dry washing machine. Cylinder-shaped sieve. It works with mechanical force.
  • Grinder. What remains at the bottom of 3-part or more grinders after grinding marijuana is Kief.

What effects does Kief have?

The effects of Kief depend on the cannabis variety used for the extraction. It will be psychoactive when extracted from a plant with high levels of THC, and will have only relaxing or medicinal effects when the cannabis has high levels of CBD and low levels of THC.

How potent is Kief?

Kief is one of the most potent extractions that exists. Depending on its quality, it can have a THC level of 50 to 80%.
