How to use liquid fertilizers

Marijuana, like any plant, requires nutrients to grow and develop to its fullest potential. In an outdoor soil-based cultivation, the soil provides most of the necessary nutrients. However, in potted plantations, it’s the responsibility of the grower to supply the nutrients to prevent deficiencies and ensure a bountiful harvest. In this case, liquid fertilizers are the simplest and most suitable option to achieve the desired results.

Why choose liquid fertilizers

Liquid fertilizers contain the nutrients that plants need at each stage of their life cycle. Initially, root stimulators help roots penetrate the substrate easily and effectively. During the growth phase, they provide the extra nitrogen necessary for strong stem and leaf development, enhancing the plant’s resistance to potential pests and preparing it for flowering. In the flowering stage, the plants require additional potassium and phosphorus to produce high-quality buds.

How much fertilizer should I use

These essential nutrients for the plant can be delivered in two ways: in the substrate or through marijuana liquid fertilizers. The latter are mixed with irrigation water and delivered in liquid form through the soil for the plant to absorb through its roots.

The quantities vary depending on the product, brand, plant type, and the growth phase. You should never apply the same amount of nitrogen during the growth phase as you do during flowering, nor use the same amount of water when the plant is rooting as when it’s mature. Therefore, the process of understanding the plant’s growth phases and interpreting its needs takes time, but product brands will always provide guidance with a measure in milliliters per liter of water used.

When to fertilize cannabis plants

In this case, there are several options. Some growers prefer to alternate between regular watering and watering with fertilizers, while others only use water with these nutrients incorporated. It also depends significantly on the growth phase of the plant, whether the cultivation is indoor or outdoor, and the local climate. Locations with ample sunlight may require more frequent watering because the substrate dries out faster in these areas.

However, just like with the quantity and method of use, fertilizer brands always provide guidelines to make it clear when watering is necessary and when it is not.

Cannabis growing charts

Due to the number of people who have questions about when and how to fertilize their plants, major cannabis product brands have created their own growing charts to leave nothing to chance. These charts indicate the exact amount of each product to add, the timing for doing so, and certain recommendations to follow in order to maximize the effectiveness of each product.

Brands like Boom Nutrients, Top Crop, Agrobeta, Plagron, and many others all provide their own growing charts to eliminate any uncertainties about what to use and when to use it. However, it’s important to note that these charts are meant as a guideline, and the user’s experience in identifying what the plant needs should always take precedence. Additionally, you should only use a specific growing chart if you have all the products from the same brand, as each manufacturer has its own measurements.

Types of fertilizers

There are various types of fertilizers available for plants in the market, providing different nutrients to cater to their specific needs. Depending on the growth stage of the plant, you can choose from several types of fertilizers:

  • Root Stimulants: Used for promoting root development.
  • Growth Fertilizers: These contain higher levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) and are used during the growth or vegetative stage.
  • Flowering Fertilizers: Rich in phosphorus and potassium, these are used to enhance plant defenses and promote flowering.
  • Stimulants, Boosters, or Metabolism Accelerators: These products are designed to enhance the plant’s metabolic processes and overall growth.
  • Bud Fatteners: Used to promote the development and size of buds.
  • Enzymes: Enzyme-based fertilizers help break down dead root material and improve nutrient absorption.

At GB The Green Brand, we offer different fertilizer kits tailored to improve your cultivation and enhance your harvest.
