How to clone a Critical Mr. Nice mother plant

Critical Mass Regular by Mr Nice is a productive variety that offers excellent results in any medium, especially indoors, where it produces incredible harvests in small spaces. It comes from the excellent producer Big Bud, crossed with a Skunk #1 phenotype, known for its sweet flavor.

The result is a variety that has become indispensable for commercial growers, as it offers incredibly heavy harvests in record time. Its open structure makes it very easy to produce cuttings from this wonderful plant, so creating a Critical Mr Nice mother can be the perfect choice.

Its genetics make it a strong plant that almost never suffers when its branches are cut. This makes rooting much easier, so you will have healthy cuttings in about 10 days. Below is an explanation of how to extract a Critical Mr Nice mother.

How to extract a Critical Mr Nice mother

To extract a Critical Mr Nice mother, you need the following materials:

  • Rooting hormones
  • A small cup
  • Brush
  • A knife or a sharp blade
  • Sprayer
  • Thermo-hygrometer
  • 0.4 L pots
  • Substrate
  • Propagator
  • Small grow tent with full lighting

Extracting a mother: step by step

You should choose a branch that has at least one node for rooting, and the rest of the plant. To do this, the steps to follow are as follows:

  • Cut a couple of cm from the stem. It should be done at a 45º angle to obtain a branch with a shape similar to a flute mouthpiece.
  • Once cut, use the knife to scrape up to the first node to remove the protective layer of the stem. Many people fail because they make the mistake of scraping more than necessary, removing the cells responsible for rooting.
  • You should do a minimal scraping, removing just 2 mm of the stem. If you are not sure how to do it, it is better not to scrape, as if you don’t scrape it will take longer to root, but if you scrape too much, it will never root and will die.
  • Fill the small cup (it is recommended to use a shot glass because you will use very little) with our rooting hormone. We will apply it to our cutting with the help of the brush (never submerge the cuttings directly into the cup).
  • The pots to use will be 0.4 L, as they will root better in these. Moisten the substrate a little to wet it without excess. Make a hole in the center of the pot with your finger, deep enough to bury the cutting up to the first node.
  • The next step will be to spray the cutting with water on the leaves, and then place it in the propagator. Cut and add the hormone. Plant, spray, and put in the propagator cutting by cutting. This manages to maintain a humidity of 90%, to be controlled with the hygrometer. Moisten the plants, because if the substrate gets too wet or water falls to the bottom of the propagator, the plants will be damaged.
  • Provide 18 hours of light per day, maintaining humidity at 90%.

Extracting a mother day by day

Regarding the process during the following days, you will follow:

  • Day 2: when checking our cuttings, the lid should be completely wet. Remove it to dry it with a cloth or towel, and our clones will breathe a few minutes of fresh air.
  • Day 3: you should spray again, remove the lid, and spray them one by one, remembering to take them out of the propagator. The lid and the bottom should be practically dry.
  • Day 4: you should find them in conditions similar to the second day, with the entire lid wet. Therefore, this time, in addition to drying the lid, remove all the cuttings and we will also dry the bottom.
  • Day 5:  you will have to spray again, repeating the process of removing them one by one to prevent water from falling into the base of the propagator.
  • Day 6: dry the lid and the base again, but when closing the lid, leave the propagator vents open for 25-30 minutes.
  • Day 7: the clones will begin to develop some roots, so they will be larger when checked. The cuttings should be sprayed again one by one, but when closing the lid, you can leave the vents open for a maximum of 2 hours.
  • Day 8: open the lid again to ventilate for a couple of minutes; this time it should be less wet, but they will be dried completely anyway. It is time to start getting our plants used to the climate outside the propagator, so you can leave the vents open for a maximum of 6 hours.
  • Day 9: the plants will need one last spray, one by one, but this time the vents will be left open for up to 18 hours.
  • Day 10: the roots of the plants will already be formed, so you can remove the lid and water some pots if the substrate is not wet.

Final phase

In the following days, they should be watered only as necessary to keep the substrate moist, so that they will force the roots to come out in search of water, and in a maximum period of 4 or 5 days you will see the roots sprout, ready for transplanting.

Extracting a mother

It is a very delicate process in which, with the slightest error, you run the risk of losing the clones. Therefore, if you decide to do it, total dedication is recommended, as it requires a lot of attention. If all steps are followed correctly, our clones will turn out perfect and will give excellent results both indoors and outdoors.
