During the trial, the subjects had to cut coffee out of their diet for a month, and then consume four cups daily for a month and finally eight cups daily for another month.

Scientists found that there were less endocannabinoid system metabolites as the coffee intake went up, which means that the endocannabinoid system was metabolizing less when more caffeine was being consumed. The general deduction from this is that caffeine in fact slows down the endocannabinoid system. We know that coffee (caffeine) stimulates nerve activity, whereas endocannabinoids actually inhibit nerve activity, which indicates that the calming of our endocannabinoid system is stopping our bodies from fully relaxing.

Caffeine Affects your High – But How?

Back in 2014 a study was done involving a compound similar to caffeine, and THC. In this study, monkeys were given very low doses of this compound and then given unrestricted access to cannabis. The findings were that when given low doses of caffeine, the monkeys actually avoided consuming more cannabis, but when given large doses of caffeine they would consume much larger amounts of THC.

One interpretation of these results is that low amounts of caffeine aren’t enough to actually affect our endocannabinoid system, which is why the monkeys needed lower amounts (there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that small amounts of caffeine actually increases the high) but when consumed in larger quantities, caffeine may negatively affect the high by slowing the ECS system down, therefore causing the monkeys to consume more cannabis to get a more pleasing effect.

Coffee and Weed – Increased Memory Loss?

In 2012 another study was done using Rats, which were given THC alongside caffeine in order to gather more information regarding the effects of coffee and weed on our brain’s capacity for short term memory. The original idea was that, as caffeine is known for actually sharpening the mind, whereas THC is known for the exact opposite, they would cancel each other out and there would be no memory loss factor involved.

However, the reality was quite different. It turns out that caffeine actually increases the short-term memory loss associated with THC. The rats were given certain amounts of THC and Caffeine combined and then given memory tasks to complete. Towards the end of the study, it was evident that the rats actually had longer short-term memory when consuming THC or caffeine separately, but actually suffered from worse working memory when they consumed both substances together.

What do We Know About Coffee and Weed?

Both caffeine and THC are the two drugs of choice in today’s modern world, with caffeine being an entirely legal drug and cannabis slowly being legalized across the globe. Many people would agree with the statement that both caffeine and cannabis can provide some pretty positive effects and a great start to the day. However, it’s important to keep in mind that all things, especially drugs, should be taken in moderation.

Coffee and weed already have some uncomfortable side effects when taken in excess on their own. For example, we’re all aware that too much coffee can cause an increase in heart rate, high blood pressure, iffy stomach behavior and even dependence, as it’s a chemically addictive substance that can cause withdrawal symptoms when cut out of one’s diet completely. On the other hand we have cannabis, which when consumed in excess can cause a dry mouth and eyes, reduced concentration, anxiety, paranoia and dizziness in some cases. This means that if you’re going to get the best possible experience out of consuming cannabis with your morning (or afternoon) coffee, you’re going to need to test a few things out and find out what works for you.

How to Combine Coffee and Weed

This is advice is going to be highly subjective, because not everyone experiences the same thing when consuming cannabis or caffeine. It’s imperative to find a combination that works for you and take your time doing it.

First, you’re going to need to find the right strain for you – we would suggest shying away from sativa-dominant strains, as they’re known for being a stimulant and if your tolerance isn’t that high it’s not a great idea to combine caffeine with more stimulants. Next, you’re going to need to decide how you plan on consuming your cannabis. Check out our Cannabis seeds – Buy Marijuana Seeds to find the one that meets your needs.

Cannabis can be ingested and inhaled, both of which have very different outcomes. When inhaled, the high is almost instant as it enters the bloodstream via your lungs. When smoked, your high should peak after about 10-15 minutes and it should be almost entirely gone after about an hour and a half. However, when ingested THC is metabolized in the liver and it becomes a different compound which is 3-7 times more potent than normal THC. This, combined with the knowledge that caffeine is also metabolized by the liver, would seem to suggest that THC and caffeine have an even greater chance of interacting when they’re both consumed via ingestion.

Essentially, if you invest enough time you can figure out your exact perfect dosage of THC alongside your morning coffee for a prolonged high as well as burst of energy, although this varies widely on the individual – for some, it may be smoking an indica-dominant joint with their coffee, and for others it may be vaping cannabis after having their second cup. All things considered, when done in moderation, this can be quite a fun experiment.

Make sure to be patient, start slow and keep track of your consumption for future reference.

It’s pretty common knowledge that many cannabis consumers like to wake and bake, which is to say light up first thing in the morning.
