This is a project that can be taken on without needing to spend much money at all, or you can <strong>splurge a bit for a fancier set-up<\/strong> \u2013 it\u2019s up to you!<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to <strong>specifically talk about vegetable gardens<\/strong> in the city, which are usually on small windowsills, balconies or even in light wells. We\u2019re going to have a quick look at <strong>some of the most important factors<\/strong> that you\u2019ll need to keep in mind for your vegetable garden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-40593 size-full\" title=\"Urban Gardening Basics\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growbarato.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/urban-gardening-in-the-city.jpg\" alt=\"urban gardening basics\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before you start, keep in mind that you can <strong>spend as little or as much as you want<\/strong>; many of the materials needed can be obtained from reusing other things or you can simply buy everything you need, which is <strong>faster and easier<\/strong>. It\u2019s entirely up to you.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Urban_Gardening_%E2%80%93_Where_should_the_garden_go\"><\/span><strong>Urban Gardening &#8211; Where should the garden go<\/strong>?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is probably the <strong>most important decision<\/strong> that you\u2019ll have to make; the environment that you place your garden in will determine most of the results. Your veggies will<strong> need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight<\/strong>. The amount of space that you can set aside for your garden depends on you, as long as it<strong> has plenty of light and decent ventilation<\/strong> \u2013 you can use a windowsill, balcony, terrace or garden if <strong>you\u2019re lucky enough to have one<\/strong>. Once you\u2019ve decided where you want to have your mini vegetable garden, you can start planning it!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_I_use_as_pots\"><\/span><strong>What can I use as pots<\/strong>?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are loads of <strong>different household items<\/strong> that you can use as flowerpots, or if you\u2019d prefer you can buy your own if you <strong>have a preference<\/strong> \u2013 just make sure that the pot that you buy or make yourself is the right size and shape for whatever type of plant that <strong>you\u2019re growing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_you_can_recycle\"><\/span><strong>Things you can recycle<\/strong>:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-40589 size-full\" title=\"Urban Gardening - Resuing a football\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growbarato.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/urban-gardening-in-the-city-football.jpg\" alt=\"urban gardening\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/>Pretty much anything that can <strong>hold some soil\/peat without breaking<\/strong> or becoming damaged by the rain or sun can be<strong> used as a flower pot<\/strong> for your garden. That\u2019s why you should try and use the highest quality soil possible. If you\u2019d prefer, you can simply buy yourself a high quality substrate that has everything that your plants could possibly need, or you can <strong>make your very own organic substrate<\/strong> at home.<\/p>\n<p>In order to make your own substrate you\u2019ll <strong>need to use certain ingredients<\/strong>. The substrate should take on a kind of spongey texture so that your plants\u2019 roots get <strong>plenty of oxygen<\/strong> and so that they <strong>don\u2019t stay too humid for too long<\/strong>. It should also have a<strong> pH of about 6.5<\/strong> and a certain amount of nutrients so that your plants can feed as they grow.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Main_soil_ingredients\"><\/span><strong>Main soil ingredients<\/strong>:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Worm humus<\/li>\n<li>Perlite<\/li>\n<li>Coco coir<\/li>\n<li>Peat mixture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: every now and then you\u2019ll need to add more nutrients so that it <strong>doesn\u2019t dry up completely<\/strong>. This is usually done by adding more worm humus on the top of the substrate and mixing it in slightly along the top layer. You can also get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbthegreenbrand.com\/growing-media-substrates\/2098-vermicompostero-to-make-humus.html\"><strong>composter<\/strong><\/a>, which allow you to use your organic leftovers to make your very own organic and environmentally-friendly \u2013 this is definitely the most self-sufficient way to <strong>make your own fertilizers and substrate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_start_urban_gardening\"><\/span><strong>How to start urban gardening:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For our garden, we\u2019re going to use <strong>plastic vegetable boxes<\/strong>. If you\u2019re following our exact method, make sure the boxes are all the same size. You\u2019ll also need some <strong>plastic zip-ties<\/strong>, some <strong>mosquito netting<\/strong>, some plastic boarding, your soil and your plants!<\/p>\n<p><strong>List of materials used<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-40597\" title=\"List of materials used\" src=\"https:\/\/www.growbarato.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/urban-gardening-plastic-box.jpg\" alt=\"urban gardening\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" \/>8 plastic fruit boxes<\/li>\n<li>1 pack of zip ties<\/li>\n<li>Mosquito netting<\/li>\n<li>Plastic sheeting<\/li>\n<li>4 sacks of substrate or 200L of your own soil mix<\/li>\n<li>Vegetable and spice clones for planting<\/li>\n<li>Once you have everything you need, you\u2019ll need to set it all up. Here we go!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting_up_your_urban_garden\"><\/span><strong>Setting up your urban garden<\/strong>:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1<\/strong>: We\u2019ve decided to put four plastic boxes together as a base; place them in your preferred distribution.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2<\/strong>: Now, you need to attach them using the zip-ties to make the most structurally sound base possible. Do the same with the other 4 boxes, which will be the flowerpots.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3<\/strong>: Press the netting down into one of the upper boxes and cut it a few centimeters above the top of the box. Repeat this with the other three boxes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>4<\/strong>: Do the same with the plastic sheeting and cut it a few centimeters above the top of the boxes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: The mosquito netting is used to<strong> stop any loose substrate coming out<\/strong> the side of the box, and the plastic sheeting is so that humidity is retained a bit more within the container.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>5<\/strong>: Grab the base you\u2019ve made using the four boxes, and place the massive flowerpot you\u2019ve just made above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>6<\/strong>: Fill the containers with your substrate, making sure it\u2019s nice and airy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>7<\/strong>: Press the substrate down very lightly and then water it along the top.<\/li>\n<li><strong>8<\/strong>: You\u2019re now ready to start transplanting your clones! Make sure to give them plenty of space, giving them an even distribution, and then water again with a small amount of water.
