Medicinal cannabis in Spain is about to go through an extremely important change; Alcaliber<\/strong>, one of the most important pharmaceuticals in the country, has signed an international deal with the Canopy Growth Corporation. The idea behind this deal is to produce medicinal cannabis in Spain<\/strong> and distribute it all over the world.<\/p>\n

The leading company in opium  production, Alcaliber (controlled by the Torreal group)<\/strong>, is one of the most important narcotic producing companies on the planet, producing up to 27% of the world\u2019s opium<\/strong>. The other opiate they produce is called thebaine<\/strong>, which is used in hundreds of medications, and they produce 18% of the world\u2019s entire supply of thebaine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Producing<\/p>\n

Torreal is a company controlled by the Abell\u00f3 family, one of the richest families in Spain, and they also have a large quantity of companies in almost every single sector. It all began in 1933<\/strong> when Juan Abell\u00f3 Pascual, director of Abell\u00f3 Laboratories, got permission to import 400kg of opium<\/strong>. Alcaliber is just a small part of Torreal, which owns a large amount of companies dedicated to entertainment, transport, education and communication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 1971 they got permission to grow poppy crops<\/strong> due to the fact that poppy is an important morphine resource. In 1973 Alcaliber was born, a company designed specifically for morphine production and a year after being created they got the necessary permission to extract opium from poppies<\/strong> and distribute it around the globe. Nowadays they still do so, and they have 14000 hectares<\/strong> dedicated to poppy crops and opium extraction, making it one of the most productive and important companies in the country.<\/p>\n

\"Producing<\/p>\n

The director of the company and son of the founder of Torreal, Juan Abell\u00f3 Gallo<\/strong>, has continued his father\u2019s legacy, and wants to bring the family business to the next level. Many scientists are working on discovering the many secrets hidden within cannabis and its medicinal properties, and new studies are proving that cannabis properties are indeed medicinally beneficial. Juan Abell\u00f3 decided to go straight to one of the biggest Cannabis Healthcare<\/strong><\/a> companies in the world; Canopy Growth Corporation and their subsidiary, Spektrum Cannabis GmbH.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Producing<\/p>\n

Canopy Growth will supply Alcaliber with a series of seeds from different strains that Alcaliber<\/strong> will develop and distribute around the world. The strains used will have completely different cannabinoid concentrations<\/strong>, allowing them to cover many different needs and guaranteeing a specific product for each customer\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not entirely sure how this will affect Spanish legislation due to how many people still see medicinal marijuana as something negative. However, mass-producing kilos of marijuana for medicinal uses in a completely legal environment might originate some sort of effect<\/strong> on public awareness or political awareness over time. Another possibility is that this is simply a business deal and that it won\u2019t affect the law at all; all we know for sure is that large quantities of cannabis are being produced in Spain.<\/p>\n
